VYKINGINSTALLATION SUGGESTIONS: 1. Consult an experienced segmental retaining wall design engineer for reinforced soil (geogrid) walls. 2. VyKing walls may be constructed on compacted aggregate or poured concrete footings. 3. Adequate embedment of the wall is necessary to avoid erosion of the footing. For walls that contact water rip rap may be required in front of the wall 4. Install a drain tube behind the wall at the footing level to carry water away from behind the wall. 5. Channel water away from the retaining wall at the surface. (See drainage swail in Drawing 1B.) 6. Use clean porous rock fill, such as 1 inch crush, for 12 inches behind the VyKing stones and as core fill. 7. Clean (sweep) the top of each layer before placing the next layer. 8. Place backfill rock and select backfill soil as each layer is set, then compact. 9. Compact the backfill soil as advised by a certified design engineer. (Normally 95% of standard Proctor.) 10. Use only light weight hand-operated compaction equipment within 3 feet of the back of the VyKing stones. 11. For geogrid layers: a. Place geogrid across the VyKing stones, porous backfill, and select fill. b. Set the next layer of VyKing stones and install pins (Be certain that pins are through openings in the geogrid.) 8” units do not use pins, use knob to anchor geogrid. c. Pull the geogrid taunt at the back and stake it to hold it taunt. d. Do not drive mechanical equipment directly on the geogrid. e. Place backfill materials and compact. |

Construction Steps
1. Mark the area to be excavated (dug out) for the wall footing 2. Compact the excavated trench before placing rock-leveling 3. Place gravel leveling pad material (3/8" minus is acceptable) 4. Set the base course of 8” VyKing Stones with Knob Down, leveling the stones in 5. Place and compact soil in front of the VyKing Stones to set
5 a Always start at the square corner and build in both directions. The VyKing corner is built by splitting the standard VyKing Stone. Corner Details are available at Landisbc.com 6. Clean or sweep the top of the base layer of VyKing Stones. Clean dirt or pebbles from each layer as it is set.
7. Continue placing layers of VyKing Stones, placing knobs down in the core of the block below and pull forward for consistent wall setback. Backfill, then compact soil and porous rock as each layer is set. Do not use heavy compaction equipment within three feet of the back of the VyKing Stones. 6” Vyking requires 2 pins per ft to be placed in the grove of stone below and pull forward for alignment (vertical or setback)
7a. GEOGRIDLAYERS. Be certain porous rock and select soil are level with the VyKing Stones after compaction. Lay geogrid directionally as shown on the geogrid. (Note:Most geogrid is directional and must be placed in the proper direction. Set another layer of VyKing Stones and drop pins through the openings in the geogrid. Pull the geogrid taunt at the back and stake it in place with pins.) Place rock and select soil fill over the geogrid and compact as with other VyKing layers.
8. Place VyKing layers to the design height, then place cap stones. Caps may have an overhang or be flush with the wall. User paver grade adhesive to glue capstones in place.
9. Use nursery matting behind the capstones. Place soil or mulch on the nursery matting allowing sod or plants to be placed directly behind the wall.
